It's a style of music that originally branched out from hardcore to emotional hardcore. Now there is another (more popular) type of emo that is part of the indie movement. Emo describes the lyrics of the music as being emotional -- almost exclusively sad. However the lyrics are only part of the qualification to make a song/band emo. Emo bands have a distinct sound, usually involving dual vocalists and longer, sustained vocals.

Emo is the worst thing to happen to music since MTV. It basically consists of a bunch of losers putting on make-up and singing about how they got dumped back in high school. Most of the time they wear women's clothing, kiss guys, cry a lot (and claim to be straight). In the music hierarchy, everybody hates emo kids, and nobody hesitates to beat the living crap out of them. Every time an emo kid cries, Chuck Norris will kick a mexican baby in the face. So it was spoken, so it shall be.

I was an Emo for halloween. I wore girl pants, combed my hair in my face, and had a collection of razor blades.
They are supposedly very dark and depressed people. Common to teens and pre-teens who are very unhappy. Some use yayo and bud, some dont. it depends.

Emo is short for emotional but it is also associated with people who are brooding, angsty, and depressing. Think punk teenagers.

but please note they really aren't related to goth. some goths consider then a bit of a joke, some fell sorry for them, some hate them more than most other people, but emo is not goth.

it means somebody that isolates him or herself for everybodyelse. Cuts themselves, wears nothing but black, hates everything, thinks that everybody hates them, listens to death metal. things like that
