I would let it cool off first.

No, it's not a good idea if there's water in the sink. If the sink is empty, it wont hurt the sink or the pan, but it's still better to let it cool off first.

what kind of metal? Cast iron will rust if left for awhile. All pots and pans should be cool befor placing them in the sink..

If the pan is "no-stick" the cool water could warp the pan and cause the finish to separate or peel off the pan...

It could cause it to warp. It also may change the temper (hardness) of the metal depending on how hot it is. I wouldn't do it
