They're all over Japan. Many of them take place around New Year's and during the winter.

The festivals are called Hadaka Matsuri - hadaka meaning naked. These festivals often involve cold water and cold temperatures.

They're not completely naked. The participants wear a fundoshi - a type of loincloth that has a thong up the back (butt floss as some call it).

The biggest one was last month in Saidaiji in Okayama where close to ten thousand half-naked guys beat the crap out of each other in order to claim a sacred object which will bring them luck and cash. One guy died from his injuries at this year's festival.

I went to a smaller one just recently out in Chiba where they throw mud around in order to ensure good luck and good harvest.
