In operating systems with Windows/DOS architecture, you cannot save a file with the name "con" because the word "con" is reserved for use as a device name. Specifically, it refers to the console, which in this context refers to the screen. If the word were not reserved, then the OS would get confused and not be able to tell if you wanted to create a file or put something on the screen.

Copy Con used to be an old DOS command to copy the contents of the prompt to a file. It was a quick and dirty way to make batch or command type files back in the DOS old days. The word may be reserved, especially if it's used without an extension, and it may also depend on where you're trying to save it.

It stands for the logical gadget named CONSOLE, and also you are able to assign assorted streams to it. also, it truly is a reserved key-word in living house windows so that you won't be able to call your document or folder like that. you are able to stress this by technique of coming up a listing by technique of creating use of this route ".C:con" so some distance as i save in ideas, yet i do not propose it, unusual issues could take position.. :)

If you mean "filename.CON", it is likely not a valid Windows file extension or reserved as stated in another reply. If you mean "con" with no file extension (the letters to the right of the period above), I can't imagine why you would want to.

To verify, go to: www.filext.com and see if it's listed.

ok i assume you use microsoft OS..
i use win xp
and i cant create a file or folder named "con" only (not an extension)
so i guess "con" is a system keyword and its reserved..

what's with people tonight? too eager to get to the thumbs down without even reading anything for accuracy.

everyone seems to have entirely missed the point in that the questioner didn't say he was running windows (obviously he is but that's neither here nor there) - 'linux os' is presumably running linux (duh) and the reserved device name thing is WINDOWS only, so he was NOT wrong and he DID just do it.

come on people, think.
