I'm estimating that 1 out of every 4 children growing up in the "old west" were killed by ravenous groundhogs. Why didn't the prairie parents do anything? And why do we still honor the demon groundhog every Feb. 2?

First off, let me say that you are just about the cutest guy I've seen on Yahoo Answers! So much so, in fact, that it's hard for me to concentrate on your question...ooh, baby.
OK, that said, I'd like to add that I live in what is considered by some to be the "Wild West" and we still have regular Prairie Dog roundups every Sunday afternoon. Those suckers are excellent when BBQ'd!
Of course, we all don our white sheets and little pointy hats on Saturday night to get Sunday's dinner, and a good time is had by all. Those of us Ground Parents who can attend just have a ball!
OMG, you wrote Prairie Parents and groundhogs. My dyslexia kicked in and I read it as GroundParents and Prairie Dogs. Good thing my hubby is reading over my shoulder.
Never mind!
Sorry!
Good luck.

Because they were sacraficed to appease the groundhog god. That is why we celebrate Feb 2. That was the traditional day when they would throw a virgin in the groundhog hole.

Betcha didn't learn that in school.
