Just had a baby boy, and my mother came to the hospital and handed me a gold coin, with no explanation. I think I was supposed to understand, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I imagine it has something to do with prosperity in the child's life, but I'd like to know where this tradition comes from and what exactly it signifies. If it helps, my mother's family is British.

I think some families do it. Is supposed to symbolize the future wealth the chid will have. The coin is a way of wishing for the child to have money and prosperity.
