Memory or disk space? Looks like you've got the two confused. Memory (RAM) is totally different to disk space. Deleting programs frees up disk space and won't have a jot of difference on your computer's speed.
If you're having slowdowns then chances are you're running Microsoft Windows. Its a badly written operating system that slow down over time. The best way to speed it back up again is to format and re-install.
Sure, you can try to "defrag" its horribly fragmented "NTFS" partitions - but it won't speed up much. You can try to remove some registry bloat and fix the various errors, but again you won't see much difference. And by the time you've run a couple those and a couple of virus scans and spyware scans, you'll have spent more time that you would doing a re-install :)

If you are talking about Memory (RAM), have a look down by the clock. Do you see a lot of program icons? If so then every icon represents a program that is running in the background and using up Memory (RAM). If you are running a Firewall, Anti-virus or some kind of spyware programs, leave them running. However, if any of the programs running are non essentials, such as Quicktime (when not in use) or an image editing program, shut them down. Click Start > Run, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK, then click the Startup tab. This will provide you a list of programs running on your PC. Untick any you don't want to run when you start your PC. You will have to Re-Start your PC before the changes will take effect. If you accidentally untick a program that you need, just go back in and tick it again. This will free up Memory (RAM) & should alloww your PC to run faster.
If you want to try to free up extra space on your hard drive, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. This will scan your Hard Drive and display you with a list of files to choose from that you can delete. Your Prefetch Folder (Open up My Computer > C: > Windows > Prefetch) contains files of recently opened programs and stores them to make the programs easier to start in the future. These files can safely be deleted. I do it all the time. Also, if your PC is running slow, it may just need to be Defraged. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Defrag. Depending on the size of your Hard Drive, the amount of programs you have installed and the state of your Hard Drive, Defragging may take a while.

If you are looking for more hard drive space then go through and check again for any files or programs that you can delete.
Then empty the recycle bin.
Next go to your control panel, click Performance & Mantence, next click Free up space on hard drive choose your drive to clean up (the C drive is the primary hard drive) and let it work this may take a wile,
After that is done you can click on Rearange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster then you can analize your hard disk to see if it needs to be defraged if it says yes then go ahead and click defrag this also my take a wile. but your computer will run faster.
If you are looking for more RAM or Random Access Memory, Then you will need to buy more or a different RAM cards and install them inside your computer. This will defanatly make your computer faster

You can delete all your internet temporary files. Go to Menu in your internet browser > tools > internet options. Then in the 'general' tab, you'll see a button that say 'delete files'. Click on the button, and OK. It will delete all your temporary internet files. Good luck.

also check if you have adequate free space on your computer.
and see if you can disable some programs at startup
http://mypchelp.blogspot.com/2006/10/pc-running-slow.html
There is a general purpose temp file cleaner software

and a slightly advanced tool for managing startups

try running disk cleanup and disk defragmenter, found here:
start menu-->all programs-->accessories-->system tools
then try getting rid of programs that start up with your comp that are unnecessary:
run: msconfig-->startup tab-->uncheck items you are 100% sure about, and dont get rid of antivirus software...thats bad
hope that helps =D
