I've noticed that black men at the mall often wear what looks like a nylon stocking on their head and I was wondering what function or advantage that type of headgear provided them.....I have never seen a white guy wear one ....what is the reason? respectfully curious

they are called Do-rags...and its not a stocking...and if white guys wear them...they look stupid..no pun intended

Defintion:
A do-rag, also spelled doo-rag or durag, is a simple piece of cloth tied at the back, used to cover the head.

From the 1930s to the 1960s, they were used by African American men to hold chemically processed hair-dos in place while they slept. Originally they were made from pieces of handkerchief, bandannas, or women's stockings, now they are made from polyester. Do-rags resurged as a fashion trend among urban youth in the 1970s and 1990s. Typically, do-rags are black, but can be worn in other colors. Do-rags are also regularly used to maintain cornrowed hairstyles.

Hip hop artists such as Chamillionaire, LL Cool J, Sheek Louch, Mike Jones, Petey Pablo and Cam'ron have helped popularize do-rags among mainstream audiences by incorporating them in their dress.

Do-rags have been used by bikers since the 60's as a convenient way of managing their hair while wearing helmets, as well as avoiding the need for a hat afterwards to hide their 'helmet-head'.

I wear them at home at night, but not in public thats ghetto....they are called du-rags or wave caps...whatever u prefer...We wear it because naturally black ppl have curly hair....when the nylon cap is placed on your head with a styling product such as gel...it tames the curls that would normally form an afro and flattens them so they become wavy instead

This is done to tame the hair by forcing it to lay downa s opposed to blow out as an afro

AND I HAVE SEEN WHITE PPL WEARING...WHICH CAUSED ME TO BUST OUT LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY..Because they have no reason too

Some famous ppl have even worn them such as Eminem

I have only see these things in films on TV. Sorry guys I don t think they give anyone a look of being "tough" just quite strange.
Tights on the head are not a good image, even if they are NOT tights!

I think it's so they don't have to deal with their hair. Same reason older white ladies wear hair scarves over their curlers.

I prefer hair that will is shoulder length or longer, As well as since that men who like women are more often then not straight, they like long hair because that looks more feminine, as most males have short hair.

they're called do-rags hon and they aren't stockings. not only do african american people wear it, caucasions do too. i've seen MANY. they mostly wear it under their fitted hats. the reason why they wear it is because they want to. it's just a style in the hood.

They wear them because they are ghetto (low class) . It's just like when you see guys walking around in public with curlers. Is that ghetto or what???

In ******* lingo they're called head wraps or wraps, skullcaps, etc

It's called a "do rag," it's used when they weave their hair. It helps to straighten out kinky hair.
