Some properties of living things include:

Internal regulation, such as homeostatic mechanisms.
Reproduction.
Organization--that is, cells, which make up tissues, which make up organs, etc.
Growth and development.
Response to stimuli.
Metabolism.

So, non-living things would possess none of these traits.

The first person to answer this is wrong...non-living things are not dead, they would have to have been living first to die, non-living things aren't dead, they were never alive in the first place. I would basically say that a non-living thing is an inanimate object.

They are also referred to as: Inorganic.

They tend to be far more fixed in their nature than living things. Otherwise, they are as you find them.
