A few things, first off the big thing is speed. To play in the back you must have speed. If you are in highschool u must run at least a 4.7 or lower or else you need to switch to LB. Second is good hands. You need to be able to catch the ball I mean come on INT is how you get your money. Also good wrist because some QBs throw extremely powerfull and if you dont have strong wrist they will snap back and you will drop possible INTs. Thrid is the ability to tackle. You need to be a heavy hitter for safety and a sure tackler for CB. Either way you should build you shoulders up. Do simple exercises like shoulder shurgs or military bench that will build your shoulders and give you the ablilty to tackle and hit hard. You also need to build your thighs up. You need that so that you can drive people back and bring the big WR or RBs down. Last but not least you need good aglitly and ankle strength. When I started playing football I had bad ankles. There is 2 ways you can fix this. 1 buy hightop cleats but i do not suggest because you can lose speed with those or 2 you can do ankle rolls. What that is, is that you put ur hand on a surface like your counter and tilt your foot inward, hold it threw for about a minute and then let up what that does is put weight on your ankles and gets them stronger but make sure you do not let go of the counter intill u have strong enough ankles or roll your ankle outward because you will hurt your ankle. If you want to play football it takes alot of dedication and commiment to start and be good. You need to hit the gym as much as you can. If you are new to football ask your coach if he will help you out otherwise just play. Good Luck!

I've played free safety every now and then but I'm starting mike linebacker for my school. love linebacker and fullback on offense :) bad thing is, coach said he's going to be moving me to full time free safety since I'm the only one qualified and almost got to all county as free safety... did it for fullback and linebacker though.

Anyways. a defensive back requires smooth hip transition. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO BACK PEDDLE!! Have to keep an eye on the QB and receiver. You need great speed to keep up with the best receivers. You also need GREAT field vision, it will lead to my better coverage and if you have good hands, will lead to interceptions and then if your strong, will lead to forced fumbles. That said, you also want great hands. ALL defensive backs want interceptions, so develop you hands, they will lead to more pass deflections as well. Strength is needed to pull down those quick receivers. They are hard to get ahold of and if you don't, they will gun it and slip free.

Hips
Speed
Field Vision
Hands
Strength
Endurance.

OH!!! Also, you might want to be able to tackle :P i heard you have to do a bit of that :)
