Answer Champion is off a bit. Without even looking it up, John Glenn went into orbit 2/20/62, so OVER 45 years ago, not 40 years ago Wednesday.

That lived? The Soviets had several cosmonauts die in orbit attempts, Yuri Gargaran was the first we heard about.
