File Transfer Protocol.

It's a way to send/receive files to a server from your computer.

File Transfer Protocol is a method used to transfer information between computers. I use it to transfer files from my computer to the computer that holds the files on which my website is stored. I have (at the moment) my choice of three different programs, any of which can use File Transfer Protocol to ship one or more files. (One of my programs is FireFTP, one is Filezilla, and the other is WS_FTP.)

In addition to shipping files from my computer to the host computer, FTP can cart a file from the host computer back to my computer. It can also be used to fetch me a list of the files on the host computer. It can also be used to fetch me a "yawn" from the host computer.

FTP involves my computer signing on with a userid and password (provided by the hosting company), and my computer must know the hosting company computer's FTP address (which they must also give me, if they want my money!)

FTP is also used, occasionally, to download files from certain websites.
