Here goes: I've worked in IT for 7+ years but am looking to get out of the corporate rat race and am looking to do something on my own. Ideally I'd like to relocate to a rural area where living is cheaper and the quality of life is better but it seems that the best work is always clustered around the larger cities. What type of work would be best for someone in my situation? I've been dreaming of relocating to a rural area for years but the lack of work in those areas has always deterred me from taking the next step.

That sounds like something I would like to do. How about starting up your own computer business or doing contract work as an IT person? Do you know where you might be going? Look at Craigslist.org for that or those cities, and find out what makes that area tick, you know, get a feel for what people need and want in that city, and create a business providing that service. You may not be able to get around working in the city. Hope that helps.

Only you can decide these things, not strangers on Yahoo who don't even know you. You need to do the research for a job in a rural area, or wherever. This is not something with which others can assist you.

Although it would take too long to re-educate, there is a huge demand for medical doctors in rural areas. Then again, it's never too late to re-educate!

Maybe you should look into being a teacher..... if you have your four year degree, see if you can get your teaching certificate.
