I am one of those disgusting people who reads her Harry Potter books over and over... but I would like to start reading a book or book series between now and the release of the last book (which I'm sure I'll read at least 4 times).

I started Anne Rice's Inerview With The Vampire series but am having a hard time getting into the second book.

I enjoy fantasy type books that aren't too far fetched but still fun. I don't care if it is a book recomended for teens or adults, as long as it is a fun read.
I also like books that really make you think.
Please don't recommend any books that are generally read for school purposes- they are all sitting on my book shelves.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I love fantasy too and I've got lots of recommendations for you.Check out the links below for more info.

Dresden file book series by Jim Butcher. There are 8 books in the series beginning with stormfront. Each novel in the series is told from the fictional perspective of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden (named by his father after Harry Houdini, Harry Blackstone, Sr., and David Copperfield). Dresden is the only professional wizard in modern-day Chicago (he is in the phone book, under "Wizards").In the world of The Dresden Files, magic is real, along with vampires, demons, spirits, faeries, werewolves, and more. The general public that Harry Dresden works to protect does not believe in magic or the large array of dark forces which regularly conspire against them. This makes it tough for Harry to get by as a working wizard and private eye.He is aided by Bob,a talking skull.Karrin Murphy-a police officer and Thomas-a white court vampire.

Dragonjousters book series(joust, alta, sanctuary) by Mercedes Lackey. The setting is ancient Egypt.Hunger, anger, and hatred are constants for young Vetch, rendered a brutally mistreated and overworked serf by the Tian conquest of his homeland. But everything improves when a Tian jouster requisitions Vetch to become the first serf ever to be a dragon boy. His training is intense, and his duty clear-cut: to tend his jouster, Ari, and his dragon, Kashet. That is only the beginning. The rest of the books are about how he gets a dragon of his own,his escape to Alta, how the war between the two kingdoms is stopped etc.

Mercedes Lackey's Take a Thief is the tale of Skif, a young orphan reminiscent of Oliver Twist, making his way in the knock-and-tumble neighborhood between two of Haven's outermost walls. Skif is intelligent, good-hearted and creative enough to forage up three meals a day in a place where food is scarce and kindness almost unheard of. After a chain of events leave him homeless, Skif lands in the lair of Bazie, an Faginish ex-mercenary who trains thieves...until he is "Chosen" by one of Valdemar's magical horses and becomes a Herald serving the Queen.

Codex Alera is a fantasy book series by Jim Butcher. The first book in the series is Furies of Calderon. The series chronicles the life of a young man named Tavi in the empire of Alera on the world of Carna. Every Aleran of every nation and caste, except for Tavi, has some degree of command over elemental forces or spirits called furies. The story takes place after the rise of a fictional empire similar to Rome where the First Lord must stave off in-fighting amongst the nobility of a now decadent empire and wield the throne through sheer force of strength and will. Tavi, trapped by fate in the midst of conflicts at home and abroad, must use all of his intelligence to save Alera.

The Time-Master trilogy By Louise Cooper.(review from Amazon)The books are 'The Initiate',The Outcast and The Master. It tells the story of Tarod a fascinating anti-hero, evolving throughout the series from a loyal disciple of Order to the God of Chaos that is his true heritage, with the repeated examination of his humanity thrown into the mix.

Belgariad book series by David Eddings. The first book is 'Pawn of Prophecy'.The story begins in aunt Pol's kitchen at Faldor's farm where Garion is being raised. The main theme of the books is about how it is to grow up and to break up with one's old life. From his safe life at the farm, Garion is being thrown into a new life controlled by a thousand of years old prophecy - the prophecy of his and the world's destiny...

Artemis Fowl book series by Eoin Colfer is about teen age criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl who even plots to steal the gold from the fairies.

Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the Mars novels and the Tarzan novels. There are 11 novels in the Mars series beginning with 'A princess of mars'.Captain John Carter of the Confederate Army is whisked to Mars and discovers a dying world of dry ocean beds where giant four-armed barbarians rule, of crumbling cities home to an advanced but decaying civilization, a world of strange beasts and savage combat, a world where love, honor and loyalty become the stuff of adventure. The later books are about his son Carthoris, daughter Tara etc.John carter is a recurring character in all these books as martians live for 1000 years.

The best among the Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs is 'Son of Tarzen.' Jack, the son of Tarzan shared his father's love for apes.He was only trying to help an ape escape to Africa from his cruel trainer. However he got involved in a murder and couldn't return home.He chose to live in the jungle with the apes. Its a fascinating book. The social system among the intelligent giant apes,Korak's relationship with Miriam are all interesting stuff. Its a great coming of age book.

Pirates of Venus introduces Carson Napier (a somewhat more cautious hero than John Carter), who builds himself a rocketship and blasts off for Mars. (How did he get to Venus? You'll just have to read the book.) Beneath the cloud cover of Venus Carson discovers a world of sky-high trees, warring kingdoms and princesses in need of rescue.

You can get free e-books by edgar rice burroughs from Project Gutenberg.

Another good series is the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The books provide an alternate take on vampires.People who are unjustly murdered call upon Artemis(Greek goddess) and she grants them a day to avenge themselves. After that they are recruited to her army to fight against evil. These are romance novels.Best of the series are 'Dance with the devil' and 'Seize the night'.

Two authors I highly recommend are:

Ursula LeGuin who has a number of novels.
LeGuin is also the author of a fantasy series for children, the Earthsea trilogy, and has received many awards, including the Boston Globe-Hornbook Award for juvenile fiction (1968) and the National Book Award (1973) for the children's book The Farthest Shore. Her other works include poetry, stories (collected in The Wind's Twelve Quarters, 1975), essays on science fiction, and the novels Malafrena (1979) and The Compass Rose (1982).

Madeline L'Engle who also has a collection of fantasy books.

A Wrinkle in Time, the novel that finally secured her lasting commercial success. For Wrinkle, she received the 1963 Newbery Medal, a particularly satisfying celebration for a book that had gathered dozens of rejections.

In the city, L’Engle involved herself with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine where she assumed the position of church librarian while enjoying a challenging tutelage under her spiritual advisor, Edward Nason West, the Episcopal cathedral’s extraordinarily learned subdean. Subsequently, West was honored in several novels as a character called “Canon Tallis.”

Her reputation firmly established, L’Engle produced confidently throughout the 1960’s. Titles include The Moon by Night (1963), The Journey with Jonah (1967), The Young Unicorns (1968), and Dance in the Desert (1969). In 1973 she wrote A Wind in the Door, continuing the “time” narrative introduced in Wrinkle, following with A Swiftly Tilting Planet (1978), Many Waters (1986) and An Acceptable Time (1989). A Ring of Endless Light, chronicling the adventures of heroine Vicki Austin, received the Newbery Honor award for 1981.

Hope this helps.

I agree with you on the Harry Potter books. I just started reading them a few months ago, I'm almost done with The Order of the Phoenix now, and I can't wait for the Deathly Hallows.

But to answer your question, they aren't fantasy books, but 3 books that I've REALLY enjoyed are Dan Brown's.... "Angels & Demons", "The DaVinci Code", and "Deception Point" are AMAZING! All three books are page-turners, the more you read the more you WANT to read. I've read Angels & Demons three times and each time feels like the first.

Happy hunting and enjoy!

Faerie Wars is a fun read,it's by Herbie Brennan and it has a sequel. It's basically about faeries and humans, except with a twist.
Artemis Fowl is also quiet funny, it's written by Eoin Colfer and it also deals with magical creatures.
The Golden Compass is interesting and it is part of a trilogy. It's written by Philip Pullman and it deals with magic and new worlds.
Eragon is an okay read, it is written by Christopher Paolini. To me it seems like a mixture of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, but it's not bad.
A Great and Terrible Beauty, it's written by Libba Bray and it too deals with magic. The story isn't very humorous but more on the dark side.
The Archer's Tale, this one is quiet different than the others I have listed but it's a great read, I got totally hooked on it. It is an adventure story and has to do with the Holy Grail.

Inkheart and Inkspell by Funke are marvelous.
Twilight and New Moon by Meyer are two of my favorite books!
The Chronicles of Narnia are fantastic!
A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels by Bray are good romance/fantasy books.
The Princess Bride by Goldman is one of my favorite books!
Wicked, Son of a Witch, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and Mirror Mirror by Maguire are all dark fantasy books that are awesome!
If you like classical books, then Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Carroll is marvelous, as is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Baum.
After Alice, you should read The Looking Glass Wars by Beddor, for it's marvelous too.
Enjoy!

I love the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, and I'm right now reading Tamora Pierce's books. They are both in the teen section. Twilight is a love story between a girl named Bella and a vampire named Edward. Tamora Pierce writes about magic and knighthood. They are both amazing...and I'm a Harry Potter freak too... so don't worry about it! check out the websites:

I am one of Harry's fans too and I must say that I find it hard to switch to something else when I'm just over with one of the six books. I liked Inkheart and Inkspell a lot too and also 'Magyk' and 'Flyte' a magical world too but very different from that of Harry.
