Typically, a BA degree in the field of your interest followed by a Masters in Library/Information science.
To become a certified school library/media specialist in some states requires the same education and certification as a classroom teacher followed by a Masters in LIS and subsequent certification to serve as a library/media specialist. Depends on the state. Also you will find some variation among the states as to the education requirements for certification as a public librarian.

Most Library Schools insist on 90 credits of liberal arts and some insist on you knowing a second language.

Education is often one of the ways because there are openings for school librarians.

Your Bachelor's degree can be in any subject you choose, but then you will need to get your Master's degree in Library or Information Science.

Any other degree will get you an entry level job.

It's generally a civil service thing, you know. A degree and time on the job gets you postions, but it helps to have a Masters or PH D
