Actually, a blackout game is exactly what it sounds like. MLB is testing a new concept this season, something they are trying to copy from bowling alleys across the country, where they are going to be installing blacklight bulbs instead of the standard stadium lights. All the players will be wearing white uniforms with stripes, vertical for the home team and horizontal for the visitors, so they will "glow". Balls, bats and other equipment will also be coated with a special chemical solution which will also make them glow under the black lights.

These games are denoted as blackouts on the schedule, and should be pretty interesting to watch. I'm really looking forward to seeing one in person, should be quite a spectacular sight.

Your local team's home game has not been sold out or reached the minimum ticket sales, which results in the game NOT being shown on basic TV such as FOX or CBS. It's due to the agreement between the team owner and the broadcasting company. It usually happens during the NFL season.

A perfect example: The Oakland Raiders NEVER sell out or meet their quota for a game so their games are never shown on CBS in the bay area.

It means the game won't be shown on the local television station for that market. Usually happens when they don't sell enough tickets to the game.
