I already asked, but I didn't really get the answer I was looking for. Thanks for answering. I'm a little nervous, especially since a guy is doing the test.

Are you getting a papsmear? If you are sexually active then you will most likely be getting a papsmear, bi-manual exam and possible STD testing. The papsmear is not as bad as people make it out to be as long as you try to relax. It does not take very long and if you are that nervous then maybe you could take your mom or best friend in with you. If it is a male doctor performing the exam, it is illegal if a woman nurse or medical assistant is not in the room as well. They use what is called a vaginal speculum which is inserted into your vagina to open it up a little and they use a little brush to collect a specimen from you and if they do any STD testing, they use a little cotton swab and collect a sample while they are doing the specimen for the papsmear. None of this is very painful at all. After that part is done, the doctor will put some vaseline/k-y jelly on his fingers and will put his fingers (one or two) into your vagina and with his other hand will feel for your ovaries by pressing on your abdomen. As far as your breast exam goes, he will have you lie down and put one arm above your head and will feel around your breast and your nipples to feel for lumps. This does not take very long either. If you can, get a woman provider to do your physical exam if you are that nervous. We as women do not like to get these things done but it is very important to do once a year while your young to check for anything abnormal. Good luck to you. Sorry such a long message!!!

When I Played Sports In High School, We Always Had To Get Our Annual Physical. I Don't Remember Them Checking Our Breasts Or Genital Areas Though. We Had To Do The Eye Sight, Checked Our Joints And Muscles, And Asked Us A Series Of Questions. I Think Only Men Have The Grab And Cough Thing For Prostate Cancer Purposes.

first of all make sure the one doing the physical examination is one authorized to do so. In the medical field if the doctor is a male and he is going to do a physical examination in you, if you can be given an option because you feel uncomfortable you may request for a female doctor, but if it's your private doctor, the male doctor usually ask a female clinic staff to accompany him in doing your physical examination.

For the breast exam, the person doing it should first inspect then palpate it by feeling your breast in an orderly manner of palpating around the breast tissue, searching for any lump or mass. For the genitalia, usually it's general inspection only , unless you have to have OB- GYNE clearance , then it would be more thorough, involving some vaginal speculum inserted, etc...

good luck !

You should be able to have any doctor you want do an exam for you- no? I don't think a pelvic or rectal exam is part of a routine physical, nor is a breast exam. Is this an especailly thorough exam for some reason? If it's just a routine physical- no prob.

For the vagina, they will do a pap smear. It doesn't hurt, its just you feel pressure. They take this thing that looks like a duck (not really, but kinda) and spread the vagina so they can take a swab of your uterus. It takes probably 5 mins at the most. The breast exam is just going to be the doctor using his fingers in a circular motion to feel for lumps, once again, not painful.

I go to a female doctor -- much less stressful.

Mine uses her hands, not her eyes, for the breast exam. So she just slips them inside the paper gown and I get to stay covered. :)

For the other, a speculum is used to widen the vagina enough to get a scraping from the cervix. It's not comfortable, but it's nothing awful. The dr. will also feel your ovaries, which again isn't comfortable but it's tolerable.

dont be scared, their doctors and know what their doing. the just touch arund the boob to make sure theres no bump indicating a tumor, its not like they squeeze it just two fingers pushing pressure points.
then in the genital they have you lay down and they just barely touch around there to make surenothing is wrong/ no STDs.

why do you need a physical for college? I thought they would only be concerned with your academic qualities.
