I'm exactly 39 weeks today with my 3rd. For the past 2 or 3 days I've been extremely tired and irritable...not really sleepy, but very tired. This never happened with my other two. This is going to sound like a stupid and redundant question, but could this be a sign that I am close to labor?

I've already had the burst of energy and nesting phase. That's why I thought it to be so weird to be really tired now.

This is perfectly normal. I think you just got very lucky with your first two pregnancies if this didn't happen. Think about everything currently happening to your body and it will make sense. It's not a sign of labour (I was beat during my entire 2nd and 3rd timester), but seeing as how you're 39 weeks along it's pretty safe to say it will be anytime.

You're probably waking up a million times a night rarely getting more than a few hours at a time. Whether it's because you're uncomfortable or need to pee doesn't make a difference. Towards the end of my pregnancy my hubby would laugh at me because I got so used to waking up at night to go pee that I often wouldn't remmember getting up once during the night never mind the 4 times I actually did. I used to wake up and ask him if I had gotten up. You may not think you're waking up, but you probably do. I found I was the queen of getting back to sleep quickly, but even so this tends to make you very tired.

You're carrying around a lot (even if you were careful it's a lot) of extra weight. Chances are it's one of the highest amounts you've ever weighed. This is just plain tiring.

There is a lot stirring around in your head about the impending birth and new addition to the family. Am I ready? Do I have everything I need? Where will I be when I go into labour? Will I be able to contact my birth partner/coach in time? How will the kids react? Who will watch the kids when I go into labour? Etc, etc. Even if you're a pretty relaxed person about the birth itself there are still a lot of unanswerred questions in the back of your mind and it can be mentally exhausting.

And with all of this happeneing, you're chasing around 2 other little people! Not much you can do about it other than make peace with the couch as much as you can. Find someone to watch the little ones for you for an hour or two if you must in order to get in a cat nap during the day. You'll need your strength and you're certainly not going to catch up on your sleep once the baby arrives.

Good luck and congrats!

Towards the end of my pregnancy, I was physically exhausted. I was sleeping 16 hours a day, and it still wasn't enough. I never even made it to 39 weeks!
The third trimester can often be a repeat of the first. Morning sickness and the exhaustion can return. It can be that, or it could simply be that you are carrying a human being inside of you...that alone is hard work!

Honey, My third pregnancy was the weirdest. Nothing about it was the same as the others. What's worse is that my body never wanted to go into labor. I would start labor and then by the time I got to the hospital I would quit. No one knows your body better than you. With my second the doctor kept saying that I was due at the end of Feb. and I kept insisting that he would be born in the beginning of Feb. So at the beginning of Feb. my doctor went on vacation and My son was born on Feb.7th. No doubt delivered by a different doctor.

Yes, but wait for that surge of energy and nesting. After that then you will probably deliver with in the next 2 days. Also talk to your doctor you may be anemic and need to take iron pills.

Yes to both... I was really tired the last couple of weeks. Like you said, not really sleepy tired (though I did try and rest as often as possible). I just did not feeling like doing much, just wanted to relax - hang low. The day that I went into labor was one of the worst! I felt horrible... not sick horrible, just super lethargic, kind of bored, uncomfortable (I guess that's a duh), and yes... irritable.

Good luck! Either way, it is just about time!

It could be a signal, but it could just be your body preparing for the labor. I did get tired at the end of my pregnancies but it didn't signal anything more than my body needed the extra rest. Take things one day at a time and don't get over stressed about it.
