Ok hows this. Sir Gawain is a romance. So what would that tell you? Do you think--were Sir Gawain a modern romance--do you think he'd be a gentleman or a jerk?

chivalry (n.) The medieval system, principles, and customs of knighthood.
chivalry (n.) The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.

So how do you think Sir Gawain would react to having the qualities idealized by a knight mocked?

For the second part about the Crusades, go back through the chaper. The quote has nothing to do with that part. How could the Crusades--a war--affect the idea that a knight is brave, courageous, and gallant? What might a soldier see in war?

there's a difference between tutoring in history and helping you cheat on a reading assignment.
