First she must find the LCD (least common denominator) by writing the multiples of 6 and 3
3,6,9,12
6,9,12,18
Then figure out which numbers they have in common 6 and 9 you have to use the lowest so 6 is the winner.
6 is your new den. but you now have to figure out what are your new numerators
4 1/6 = ?/6
2 2/3 = ?/6
ask yourself 3 times what gives me six? 2 so multiply your old num. (2) by 2 and your new num. is 4
Do the same for 4 1/6 - 6 times what gives me six (1) so multiply 1 and 1 and get 1 your new fractions should be
4 1/6
2 4/6
Now that you have like denominators you can sub. but you run into a problem. 1 is less than 4 so you can't subtract that you must borrow from the whole number 4 and change it to a 3 ( because you took a whole away you have to add it back by changing it into an equivalent fraction like 6/6 you add 6/6 to 1/6 and get 7/6.
3 7/6
2 4/6
Now you can subtract
3-2=1 and 7/6-4/6=3/6
so you have 1 3/6 but 3/6 can be reduced to 1/2 so the final answer is 1 1/2
It is difficult to explain without being able to show you, but I hope this helps

First get common denominator. the 6 and 3 of of 1/6 & 2/3 are, of course, not equal. Multiply the 3 (and the 2 above it) by 2 to make it equal 4/6. Now ur problem is 4 1/6 - 2 4/6. multiply the 4 and the 2 by six and add it to the numerator (number on top of fraction) to get 25/6 - 16/6. Ur answer is 9/6 which can be simplified to 1 3/6 or 1 1/2.

4 1/6 - 2 2/3 First find a common denominator tor the fractions.
4 1/6 - 2 4/6
then "borrow 1 from the 4 which is 6/6 and add to 1/6
3 7/6 - 2 4/6 = 1 3/6 = 1 1/2

Just simply say the following....
Change the denominator of the second number so it is 2 4/6 instead of 2 2/3.
I recommend making them improper numbers by multiplying the denominator by the whole number, adding the numerator, and putting it over the original denominator so it turns out 25/6 - 16/6.
That equals 9/6 and when you reduce that (divide top by bottom) you get 1 1/2.

1) First, find a least common denominator. Since 6 is divisible by 3, you can express both numbers in terms of how many sixths they represent.
2) Express both numbers as sixths: 4 1/6 = ((4x6)+1)/6 = 25/6.
and 2 2/3 = 2((2x3)+2)/2x3= 2(8)/2(3)=16/6
3) Solve: 25/6 - 16/6 = 9/6 = 1 1/2
Hope that helps.
