When you write a song, remember that the verses should be about 8 lines long and (though i am lenient about this when i write songs) all corresponding versus should have the same number of counts. The chorus should ideally have the title of the song in it and be about 4-12 lines long. If you have a bridge it is placed between the second and third repeat of the chorus. If there is a pre-chorus it is always placed after each verse. Pre-choruses can have different lyrics...but choruses cannot (though i sometimes change up my choruses on the repeats as long as it's not a totally different chorus in the end...)
As for the actually writing of a song...when I write...I never write when I don't feel inspired! Usually, when I really want to write a song, I listen to my favorite songs and get some ideas and stuff. But...most of the time...when I write a good song...it's on accident! Usually I mean to write down a good idea I had...but then, before I know it...in 15 minutes I have a great song! lol So...it depends on who you are and how you like to write and what environments inspire you.

hope this helped!!

Try not to model off of another song, it'll be a clone in one way or another. Also, if writing lyrics, write whenever something has just happenned. And use sarcasm and stuff, it's funny.

Many of my songs were written when I was trying to learn another song by ear. They never turn out like copies...I'm always distracted when trying to learn a song and I go my own way.

For lyrics, just try to tell a story.

When I'm writing my songs I usually write them about how I'm feeling or something that's happened...sometimes people. I try to make them rhyme and sound quite poetic. I like the ABCB rhyming scheme best!
