I am 18 years old and I have a very abnormal period. I first got it when I was about 12 and had it pretty regularly until I was about 16 or 17 then it stopped coming every month and I only get it about 4 or 5 times a year, sometimes less. Could this have something to do with the fact that I started to become sexually active at 17? I have been tested for STD's and they're all negative. Does anyone have any suggestions or information?

i got my period when i was in 6th grade so i think i was 12. after my first period it took about 6 months to come back. i thought it was normal because my health teacher says thats after the 1st one the 2nd usually comes later. so i thought i was ok. but i noticed that after my 2nd period it didn;t come after a month. it came 6 months after. and i ignored it because i was lucky than most girls because i wasn't dealing with the mess, etc. when i turned 16, i went to the gyne and had all the works done. then i found out that it wasnt normal at all. i forgot what my condtion was called. but she said i'll be having difficulty in concieving a child but it is not impossible.

so she gave me pills, i think it was hormones. and i took it for days and then i had my period. when i stopped going to the doctor because it was regular already, at one time it stopped coming again.

but you know what's funny, the time i started exercising (im overweight/obese by the way), i'm having my monthly period. although its not as regular as most girls (i can;t predict it) at least it comes monthly. but its not as much (sometimes i only get stains) and can only last days. i haven;t checked with the doctor yet.

i think sexual activity affects it. i had a friend who had a pregnancy scare because she started doing it with a boyfriend. but after awhile it goes back to normal.

If you are very stressed out, your periods are usually very abnormal. Also, if you have an abnormal diet/exercise routine, it could also add to the problem. I wouldn't imagine it's anything to worry about. I also got my period at a very young age and it use to be very abnormal and when it did come, i was stuck in my room for a week. My advice would be go on birth control! It's the best thing I've ever done. Your doctor would most likely recommend the same thing. If your parents don't want you going on it, I would suggest even going to planned parenthood.

I suggest seeing a doctor. I also suggest having a pap smear.

If you are not pregnant then you should think about getting on birth control pills. They will help regulate your periods.
