multiply = * above the 9 key on the number pad on a UK keyboard.
division = / above the 8 key on the number pad on a UK keyboard.
your not an idiot if you don't know these things you don't know them. and unless you have been shown or told how would you know what is what?
if you want to make things easy and you are using a genuine copy of windows from microsoft you can get a free calc that does conversions from http://www.microsoft.com and search for calculator plus (or calcplus or something like that) useful little calculator. once installed you can create a shortcut to it on your desktop or in your quicklaunch bar (part of the taskbar (at the bottom of the screen with the clock, normally).
once you creat the shortcut you can then set a key combination that when pressed will open the calculator on demand.
dead easy to do.

personal experiance of building and customising my own systems for many years.
good luck.

Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | Calculator. The characters on the calculator are the same symbols used for math operators in algebra and PC lingo.

Asterisk is commonly used for multiplication (shift plus 8). Slash is commonly used for division (down there under the question mark). But I'll bet that isn't what you mean, eh? You mean the big X and the dash with the dot above and below it, eh? Nope, nobody's home.

first poster has no idea what they are talking about.

the numpad has three symbols across the top(above 7,8, and 9 and next to numlock) that look like this: / * and -

/ is the division sign
* is the multiplication sign
- is the subtract sign(just in case you needed to know)

multiplication is the * key--the one over the 8 and the forward slash(/) for divide

2007-03-08 20:15:10 · answer #9 · answered by Terry Z 4 · 2 1

the asterisk (*) is for multiplication
the slash (/) is for division

if you need to just illustrate it use "x" as the sign for multiplication and type "ALT 0247" for division which will show this "÷"
