On my laptop, next to the ctrl and the windows start button, in between those two there is the letters "fn" they are in a box type thing. What do those letters actually mean? What do they do?

"fn" stands for function, and it lets you use the functions that are located in blue font at the top of your keyboard(on the f keys and delete and such) such are LCD/CRT out and brightness levels, etc.

on my keyboard it is for numbers in a 10-key set up. you press the fn key and the letter j and that is a 1, k=2, l=3, u=4, i=5, o=6, 7=7, 8=8, 9=9, m=0.

it means function, it just makes some buttons do something other than if you pressed them normally, for expample if it's blue so keys will also have a blue sign that will be active if you press it while holding down the fn button, it's mainly shortcuts though, nothing you must use
