Aren't we taking God's judgment into our own hands when we take a person's life. what if they would have repented? Wasn't Jesus' death the result of the death penalty? How do you justify support for the penalty?

Maybe we need to read the New Testament.

Sadly many of the answers you got are based on revenge, that is, an eye for an eye mentality. They do not have the facts. There are so many reason to prefer alternatives to the death penalty-

-the death penalty costs more than life in prison
-the death penalty risks killing innocent people (123 exonerated already- more than one tenth the number executed)
-the death penalty is not a deterrent
-the death penalty is very hard on families of murder victims

Life without parole is on the books in 48 states. 47% of Americans prefer life without parole while 46% prefer the death penalty. Preferring life without parole does not mean you condone brutal crimes or the people who commit them.

Apart from religious and ethical beliefs, common sense based on the facts is the way to go.

Several things occur to me.

Killing someone can't erase or atone for the murder of another human being. The death penalty is not a matter of "eye for an eye"

But what can you do, when somone has so little respect for human society that they are willing to kill somone just because they feel like it. Imprisoning somone for life is hardly much better.

I think it is pretty safe to chalk out the idea of the death penalty being a reliable deterrent.

It is really a good idea to execute somone, if there is even a small posibility that they are innocent?

Just some thoughts

This is not in justification of the death penalty (although Old Testament says, "An eye for an eye..." however we all are sinners in some shape, form, or fashion. If the person is true in their faith and asks for forgiveness of their sins, they should receive repentance.

Okay, does this mean a serial killer when asked for forgiveness after committing murder is forgiven? No one sits that high to answer that. So now you have this quirk mire regarding forgiveness for sins when asked.

Now, we have those who say that if you know it's a sin and you commit it and ask for forgiveness and it's given, that doesn't give you free reign to go out and commit the sin again expecting forgiveness. Well, isn't God an all forgiving and loving God?

So, this may not fly well with people who analyze and scrutinize things somewhat like I've only begun to have done. I wouldn't personally kill someone if they've killed someone of my knowing, but our legal system would and that's their cross to bear.

I am proud to be an Atheist the trendy do gooders who bleat on about the Death Penalty, who you all put your family loved ones to their death and say " OH Lord! Kill them! Kill Them! and say to them "Burn in Hell you Sinners!" or would protect them from harm Oh by the way being an Atheist is not being a Commie. Thank the Lord the U.K has got rid of Capital Punishment.

As Christians we leave judgment to our God. As imperfect beings who are we to judge? The death penalty traditionally discriminates to the poor the disenfranchised and the minorities that already suffer prejudice. God said vengeance is mine.

I'm glad I don't make that decision.Thoe there are a few people I'd love to see get convicted of what they did.You can repent anytime,as long as it comes from the heart.
Jesus's death was the result of jelous high priests and he had to die.Sad as it was at the time.

I don't feel I have to justify it, but since you ask....God helped man create the technologies and ideas to develop the death penalty....that is the long version...in short....eye for an eye! Peace out!!

They usually have several years to repent before they fry. Perhaps we should take away all forms of punishment, discipline, and consequences and let God sort it out. That will surely make the world a better place.

People who criticize the death penalty are usually folks who have never had a crime committed towards them or someone they love that merits it.

If someone brutally raped your child, your mother, or your best friend, then tortured and killed them, you'd call for blood too.

If you disagree, see paragraph 1.

when jesus died on that corss...the flesh was crusified...jesus went directly to heaven...

anyone on death row waiting an execution...has alot of time to think...and, a clergy member is there for them. they sometimes repent and, directly to go heaven as jesus did...

when one is executed, the flesh is...not the spirit and soul...that is forever...

How can we let a killer live in this society? how can we support this person in prison forever...think about it...
