I just started a new job and it's a bit over my head. Not a lot over my head, but just enough to make me nervous. What's the best way to survive until you ramp up?

i read about some female president or ceo or something of some big company, now i forget her name or the company, she was there for about 8 months i think, and they fired her for not being able to learn the ropes there, and gave her a six million+ goodbye present. I assume you are just a peon though, you had better shape up or you will get canned without any benefit package. I guess you will just have to put in extra hours, and hope they dont notice.

SINCE EVERYONE KNOWS YOU ARE NEW TO THE POSITION, learn to say: "I am new to this position, (how do I do this - who do I contact for this - what is the best way to handle this)." Most times people will help, and the only reason they were not jumping in at the beginning is because they did not want to get in your way.

Make sure you take notes, and study from other sources than on the job. The dual input of information will make you an expert faster and quicker than those co-workers that know what you don't, but spend most of their time with another part of the business.

Most people fail because they are afraid to admit that they don't know something, afraid to ask for help.

It's situations like these that really prove to yourself you can do it!

My suggestions are as follows:
o find a mentor who understands your situation, either at work or outside work
o find similar examples of work from coworkers and pour over them for ideas
o read, read, read
o try things and learn from them
o stay late to get something done (obviously)
o when in serious doubt, ask! But don't ask too many questions or it will become obvious you're in over your head.

Best,

Ive been that way, its a natural nervousness that comes when your learning new things and want to do your best. Relax, learn everything you can, and after awhile you will excel at it, be patient with yourself.

PS. I am a manager, and you sound like the kind of employee I'd want to have.
