People will always continue to search for buried treasure. Archaeologist searching pyramids, unearthing lost cities and divers finding sunken ships. Yes modern day pirates do exist. There was a recent story about a cruise ship out running them near the African coast.

Lots of pirates in SE Asia and off the west coast of Africa and the north coast of Africa in the Mediterranian sea. Still lots of treasure hunters, too. Some are successful, but that involves mostly ship wrecks these days. Some folks are searching a island off the coast of Maine (I think) that has an unusual, intricate tunnel system with a lot of traps that is supposed to hold buried treasure. Wish my memory was better on the name of the island. Maybe someone else can help. There's lots of treasure in sunken Spanish ships traveling from the Americas to Spain. Just looked at the other answers--it's Oak Island. Someone made a complex tunnel for some reason there.

Yes on both questions. However there is no real evidence that pirates ever buried their treasure most pirate treasure is found on shipwrecks out at sea.
As for modern pirates there is Billions of dollars lost to piracy. and a lot of money being spent to pay off pirates as well as money going to firms that protect against pirates.
Unfortunately Pirates don't generally wear eye patches, have peg legs, and talk like "Arrr Ye matey where be the gold" any more but they should.

Pirates still exist, but they are not as cool as the one and only Blackbeard, or Calico Jack Rackham of the past. I would be wary of any area or body of water near countries with a civil war going on or in the Pacific Island areas near International waters. I have also heard of problems in the Carribbean.

Most of the Pirates operate as Pirates in Open Waters that no nation claims or has protective agents over.

As far as buried treasure....who is to really say. Have you ever heard of a pirate leaving behind an accurate map to his buried trasure and someone finding it? To be honest, I would have to say, if the captain of the pirate ship left behind buried treasure unattended and with others knowing about it, that captain would be just plain stupid with all the ship jumping and arresting that went on so often. Although, I can say many ships sunk with loads of treasure aboard, so someone might go diving for it here and there.

NOTE: If you find any sort of buried treasure and can prove who buried it, it is not a law of finder's keeper's.

I'm not sure if anyone still searches for burried treasure but yes there are still pirates. if you don't believe me then you will be surprised when one day when you're all alone on a boat near a tropical island and a ship comes around the corner, see's you and comes over to search you for valuables! Think about, why wouldn't there still be pirates if there's a great opportunity to rob an unsuspected tourist vacationing in isolation because they think pirates no longer exist!

Yes, there are still pirates -- they steal cargoes or private yachts. Not nice people.

When I was in Korea (2000) there was some people looking for the gold and jewerly the Japanese stolded the from the Korean on CP Market in Yong sung Korea. They had (I assume it was American ex-vets) to dig holes on the small base that was considered American soil on Korean land. By the way the building I worked in was known to be a place to torture Koreans a long time ago by Japs. I could still see forms of something walking around at night and going thru doors when I was alone doing my email.

Plenty of real life pirates in the Indian Ocean. An Australian Cruise Ship was boarded not long ago. The AK wielding pirates were repelled, but they are getting bolder. There should be something on Google.....

Mel Fisher is one of the most successful modern day treasure hunters. I have a gold coin off of the Atocha wreck that he found!

Pirates exist today, but I am afraid it is not as romantic as the old stories are. They highjack yachts and sailboats and steal cargo. Nasy lot.

I like the stories though. Captain Hook is still my all time fav.
