I am supposed to get this for free, so why am I being asked to buy every song to download?

Probably, you get the ability to LISTEN to any songs you want for free, but to actually download it costs you. That's the way Rhapsody works, at least. It's deceiving, kind of, when you subscribe to that service -- if you don't really read what you are subscribing to.
