Please have your oil changed every three months or 3,000 miles. Not only is it good for your engine, but it is a good opportunity for you or a professional to give your car a quick look over and spot potential problems.

At our shop, we recommend 3,000 mile oil change intervals. When the technicians perform the service they also check all of the fluids, top off any low fluids, and set the tire pressure. Also, they will glance at belts, hoses, etc. We do this all for 20 bucks. Sometimes we can let a customer know of a failing part before they have a break down.

For those that separate oil changes and filter changes, be aware that your oil filter is the first to reach it's performance limit. Filters can cost less than $5; it's really not worth running oil through your engine that can't be filtered because the filter has reached it's capacity.

For all of the cynics out there, we do not sell unneeded repairs nor pressure our customers at any time.

Read your owner's manual. The traditional 3000 mile oil change is generally overkill, long change intervals are often recommended today. Some cars MUST use synthetic oil, and those cars often have change intervals of 10,000 miles or more.

It's also important to follow the manufacturer's specifications. Some shops routinely use 10W40 on the heavier is better principal, but many new engines are designed for 10W30 or even 10W20. Using a heavier oil has no value as far as run time, and will impact your fuel efficiency and ultimately engine life.

Qualification: I have four cars in the barn with more than 100K miles, all running great on manufacturer's service schedules. The champ is 220,000 miles on my current Mercedes, doing oil changes every 5000.

I check my oil 1 month after I change it, then keep an eye on it till it starts to get brown, then change it.... I would say not over 3K miles.... or 2-3 months tops.

Every 3,000 miles. 5,000 if you use a synthetic oil. Your objective is not to let the oil get dirty.
