People with the title Market Research Analyst represent more than 80% of all market research and related jobs. So, it's a very common title and presents an opportunity upon which many careers are built.

The average salary range for a Market Research Analyst with a bachelor's degree is $50,000 to $80,000. A bachelor's degree is generally a requirement for the position. But those with advanced degrees earn more and often manage a team of less-senior Market Research Analysts.

A Market Research Analyst is generally responsible for interpreting data, formulating reports and making recommendations based upon hard facts and research findings.

Market Research Analysts generally work with internal/external clients to define the business issue at hand. Frequently the Market Research Analyst applies qualitative and numerical techniques to interpret data and make insightful recommendations.

Market Research Analysts often present their findings and recommendations to clients via in-person meetings.

Average salay $82,000. Straight out of school w/ no experience probably around $40,000. The top 5% (Marketing Director), meaning you are the best or your uncle runs the place, make over $200,000! You can get into the career w/ a 4 yr undergrad degree. To make director, an MBA will help. You can major in marketing in graduate and undergrad level. Back at my school, you can major in marketing under the college of communciations or get business degree w/ a concentration in marketing. I would suggest going the business route. You can also use it as a concentration if you go get an MBA.

Here is the job description:

Determine the demand for products and services offered by a firm and its competitors and identify potential customers. Develop pricing strategies with the goal of maximizing the firm's profits or share of the market while ensuring the firm's customers are satisfied. Oversee product development or monitor trends that indicate the need for new products and services. Research market conditions in local, regional, or national areas to determine potential sales of a product or service. May gather information on competitors, prices, sales, and methods of marketing and distribution. May use survey results to create a marketing campaign based on regional preferences and buying habits.

Entry level market research positions usually require a college degree. Applicant's I've seen most often have degrees in marketing, social sciences or business.

There are several ways to clearly differentiate yourself versus others:
1) Understand statistical analysis and related software packages (e.g. SPSS, SAS)
2) Understand social science research methods.
3) Learn to write well
4) Present findings effectively

Numbers 1 and 2 will get you in the door. Numbers 3 and 4 will get you promotions.
