In my spare time I, and a group of others, crawl under bridges and walk through alleys in downtown Atlanta and drag drunks, heroin addicts, meth addicts and crack heads out in the sun and feed them. Most of them don't want to recovery but a few of them do. We help the ones who do and most of them stay straight.
I also volunteer my time with an organization in Atlanta that helps drug addicts and those fresh out of prison normalize themselves into society. First, we get them a fresh pair of clothes and a shower. We help them find their birth certificates and other personal documentation. Next, we put them in touch with a halfway house where they can live. We have two factories. One makes mops. We tell them that they must show-up for work everyday, ON TIME, for $6.00 per hour. After 6 months, we put them in the machine parts manufacturing department for $10.00 per hour. After a year, they have resumes, clean clothes and a place to live. This whole program is self-financing.
We also offer adult education classes which teach math and reading. Also a health center with a weight room, aerobics and yoga.
You would be surprised how many of these people are leading healthy, productive, drug-free, crime-free lives.
