I recently went off my birth control pills about a month ago. I was taking Loestrin 24 and I didn't like them, so I finished the pack I was on and then stopped them.

Here's the problem. My period is a week late and I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I've had no symptoms of being pregnant and I've also had NO symptoms of feeling like I'm going to start my period either.

Does anyone know if this is normal to be late after stopping birth control pills? Does this sound strange??? Should I go ahead and call the doc ??

It can take a REALLY long time get your period normally again, up to a year or more! Your body has been fooled into thinking it was pregnant for awhile, and so it takes a bit for the hormones to equalize out again. Congrats for getting off the pill! There is a nice alternative for the responsible person, presented in the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. She talks about how to figure out when you are fertile (it's amazing!) and then manage for those times. Most of the time you aren't fertile (I can only potentially get pregnant for like 8 out of 32 days, max!!). Anywho, no worries! You are fine!

Right now your body and hormones are going through a change. You cycle will not be what it was when you had those pills to keep it on time and dependable.

You may find that your cycle is different every month and totally unreliable. Do not freak out because worring too much about it can keep your period from coming too.

Just give yourself a little time and it will come. You will need to keep a log of the dates to kind of guess what is normal for you sans the pill. I bet within three months you will begin to see a pattern and all will be ok.

I would see your Gyn.

Sometimes women have trouble readjusting their cycles after going off of the pill or don't have regular periods, but you should see your doctor to be sure of what is going on.
