I understand that college is meant to be a journey through which you explore many aspects of life and try to discover who you are but that seems to take college kids away from academics which is essentially what they went to college for !!!! If you take into consideration the time spent working and on relationships and fun, doesn't that leave the students with very little time for academics !!! I'm just wondering.

Yes, I think you are right. This is one reason for students delaying going to college directly from high school, so that they get some of that late adolescent stuff out of the way before trying to complete their education.

Many people do focus on the social/personal aspect of college and largely ignore their academics. They get by with C's and after they graduate, they realize noone will hire them because they never aquired the skills/knowledge that was afforded to them in school.

You have a point although keep in mind that some kids didn't go to college to learn. They went to waste their parents money and party like its going out of style!!

I think they probably should focus more on their education but its their life and in some instances their dollar.

Think of it as learning to balance the need to work and the need to live life as fully as you can. That is a learned trait. How many "work aholics" do you see who have failed to learn how to live or how many slaggarts have you seen who have failed to learn to work. Neither the workaholic or the slaggart is ulitmately productive. Would you argue that work lets the workers go after a day of work or that the workforce should not have outside interests? Life is balance. A balanced worker is a productive worker, healthier and happier and more rounded with experience.

Academics are definately the point of college, but you cannot solely focus on that. Social development is very important in college as well.

There is plenty of time for balance. People go out at night so you get your work done before you go out or you go to the library and stay in
