You're talking about two different systems of measurement: "acres" are part of the British - designed (and now obsolete in Australia) system called "Imperial" and "hectares" are from the French - designed "Metric" system.

Imperial measurements were derived from things mostly to do with farming; whereas the Metric system is based on the much more scientific and easy to use decimal concept, as in 10mm = 1cm; 100cm = 1 metre; 10 000 square metres = 1 hectare; 1 Litre of water weighs 1 Kilogram etc. etc.

There are lots of conversion programmes available on the Web - that's where the two answers above were found. There are also lots of calculators around which have conversion facilities if you need something more portable.

i have a conversion thing that says its called a hectare and there are 10,000 sq m in a hectare
