Carrie's mother was a mental case. Her husband left her when Carrie was a baby and she snapped. She turned to so called religion and wanted Carrie to be pure. That meant not admiring herself and not having any contact with men at all. Having her menstrual cycle signified that Carrie was having illicit thoughts and it was a way for her to confine Carrie and save her from herself.

because her mother thought she was already having sex her mother thought that was when you started getting your period and that to her mother was a sin and she needed to pray for forgiveness.
