I'm about to install a distribution of linux, and I am curious as to which one I should download. There are different iso's for i386, x86-64, etc. I currently use a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Processor

It depends on your processor.

ppc - PowerPC, Macs
x86, i386, i486, i586 - Intel x86 family, Pentiums etc.
x86-64 - Are for 64 bit intel-like systems.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 is a 64 bit intel-like processor (x86-64). There are several distros specifical designed to work 64bit, and many of the best ditros have 64bit versions.

Since you have an x86-64 processor, you might as well get an x86-64 build. Or at least an i686 build.

Try Kubuntu's 64 bit version. It's one of the easiest for Windows users to learn. And it's free.

x84 is the most common but since the AMD64 allows you to run 64x 64x will be faster. Be aware make sure most of the programs that you will run on linux are 64bit compatiable
