I have an idea for a book... but I really need to work on it! If I do publish it... would anyone read it??? It would be about magic, mystery, dragons (NOT SUPRISING!) and royalty. The main character(s) names would possibly be Laurel, Edward, and Lord Roberto. Do you think it'll make it?

While people are quoting success of high schoolers here, think how many there are writing and how many actually are published. I doubt the number published would be much into double figures, while the number writing could be hundreds of thousands. There is a reason for this, and at is the same reason i would not generally read a book by someone written in high school.

I would read one, but it would depend on what the story is about.

The best example you should look forward to is Christopher Paolini who wrote the Eragon series. He wrote the first book when he was just 15 years old.

Look at him now, he has two of the biggest books in recent years under his belt, Eragon and Eldest. Is currently working on the third while he goes to college. And for which the first one was made into a multi-million dollar movie, starrring Sienna Guillory, Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich.

This all started when he was 15 and he just now only turned 23 this past year.

So if you think you have a good idea you should go for it. He did and look where it got him.

Of course a book written by a high schooler would be read (hopefully), though you wouldn't necessarily make it as an author. The author of Eragon was 15 and me, as a 14 year old, I'm working on quite a few projects including novels and comic scripts.
If you've got hope, a good plot, characters, and actually know how to write--or at least can catch a ghostwriter--you'll be able to make it.

Plenty of people do read books written by high schoolers. SE Hinton wrote The Outsiders at 15 and published it at 16. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes wrote her first vampire novel at, I think, 13.

It is about how good the book is, not who old the author is.

Join a writing group for some constructive criticism, and get a book from the library on how to get your book published. It will help you set realistic goals.

I really don't think it matters if you're a high schooler or not. If you have talent and the book is interesting, you've got a best seller!
If not, well, then no one will read it.
But don't let the fact you're still in high school stop you!
While you're writing it have a couple of people proof read it for you and give you their comments on the characters and progress of the book.. It will help you develop your story to be more interesting for your readers.
Good luck!

YOu haven't given us an idea of the plot, character etc. i am an avid fantasy reader and I think you should give it a go. Fantasy readers are passionate readers. The fantasy writers also write in chronicles so the story becomes never ending but can twist and turn into other chronicles. Sort of like when Friends ended Joey had his own show etc. I say go for it and believe in yourself then others will believe in you! Once yuou have finished the book ask someone who reads fantasy to read it for yuo. They may be able to give you a good insight.Good luck and best wishes for your journey into writing.

i was just wondering why "high" is in quotes. you under the influence or something?

nah, just joking. no one's stopping you from doing what you want, though i would warn you that the dragon genre has been done and done and done again, so maybe you'd want to spice it up a little (unless you already have, then completely ignore me).

happy writing

---ahh yes, and don't listen to that eragon stuff; that kid's parents were in publishing, so no **** he got his stuff published. but seriously, normal people can get published at any age too. it's just a question of how popular the work will be (depending on the publishers you send it to and who accepts your manuscript)

i think that the movie 13 was written by a teenager, the movie that just came out about dragons eragon maybe, was originally a book written by a teenager, and I want to say that catcher in the rye was written by a teenager too... So was The Diary of Anne Frank, so yes, definitely

Eragon was written by a high schooler, so yes, people will read it if the quality is high enough.
