Spelling is important in that it can make you look like an idiot if you make even a minor mistake. When someone replies to an email I sent them, I frequently will notice misspellings I have made and become mortified that I came off sounding stupid. Using a spell checker is easy enough to do, but many typos will sneak past because the typo is a valid word.
There are a few words, though, that bug me when people constantly get them wrong. "There", "they're" and "their" are confused and used incorrectly by almost everybody.
People who complain about "spelling nazis" are probably bad at spelling and are frustrated that other people may think they are less intelligent than they really are.
Spelling is not a definitive indicator on whether someone is smart, but it tends to convey a negative impression if mistakes are made.
It is ironic that in this age of spell checkers and online dictionaries most people have devolved into near illiteracy.
Perhaps IRC abbreviations and text messaging has something to do with it.

In written legalese it can be tricky. A misplaced coma can mean the difference of a water right access, and a waters right, access.
The extra s or plural can mean farmer A gets water, farmer b gets none.
I will learn more Esperanto and use that as Universal Language, but I am too old to adaptively integrate a new language. I can give it a try though
Colour or Coloure or Color they relate the same agreed upon object, so spelling is just picking at the nuances of the idea put forward.

I dont necessarily think its important, but it is nice. As long as it sounds like the word, it should be okay. Who really wants a word spelt XYLOPHONE? Why cant it just be ZYLAFONE? Im not suggesting spelling and maybe even the english grammar be tossed out, but it shouldnt be how people are judged.
