A gesture of solidarity between two friendly nations. We received it in 1865 in recognition of our friendship with France since our Independence. Remember, our Revolutions were not all that far apart, and our founding fathers were spectators to the French Revolution.

To celebrate our revolution, which inspired the French Revolution (it was given to the US in 1886 one-hundred and ten years after the 1776 Revolution).

It also was a clever dig that they could do better work with iron then the US could. Gustave Eiffel designed the Eiffel Tower earlier and he was responsible for designing the original and current structural support system.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Liberty
"Liberty Enlightening the World (French: La liberté éclairant le monde), known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty (Statue de la Liberté), is a colossal statue given to the United States by France in 1886, standing at Liberty Island, in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the Repoussé technique."

As a gesture of friendship between two nations. Don't overlook that if it wasn't for French support during the Revolutionary war the US might not have won it's independence. And the American Revolution was soon followed by the French Revolution. Ben Franlin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson spent time in official positions in France and captivated the French population. Ben Franklin was the superstar of his time to the French.

Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

It was a present for our hundredth birthday. Keep in mind that France was not only our close friend at the time, but that they were largely responsible for the American Revolution even succeeding in the first place.

It's not like they did EVERYTHING, though. They made the statue while we made the base. They cost about the same amount to produce. Personally, I think the teamwork on the project just makes it more meaningful. ( :
