It sounds like you had dozens of items selected on your desktop, and then you right-clicked and chose "Create shortcut", thus leading to dozens of shortcuts being created.

Delete the ones you don't really use anymore. It will help you find the ones you want more easily, and it doesn't delete the program, it will just clean up your desktop. You can also delete unused programs entirely from the control panel add/remove programs.

Alternatively you can arrange them by what they are used for... work, games, help files, etc., or make folders for the different classes so you can open your "games" folder and find your game links. I usually put my most used icons at the top... business application links, browser link, etc. and then arrange less important links in other groups below. Really infrequently used links that you don't use much but don't want to get rid of, you can put in an "other shortcuts" folder, and pull them out if you start to use them again.

Nothing bad happens, you just have dozens of icons on your desktop. If you want to hide them, make a new folder by right clicking the desktop, then drag all your icons to the folder. Now you would have one folder and when you open it, you will have all your icons. If ou want to keep them all over your desktop, then just leave them there. It is your desktop............. After reading the latest response, then just delete them if they are shortcuts you do not need or want.

Utter confusion! Do they gain you anything if *you* don't know they're there? A shortcut should be for programs *you* use frequently, and if *you* don't use a shortcut often, then get it out of the way! (Maybe use the shortcut cleaner for infrequently used ones!) I don't think icons are meant to be wallpaper!
