Bands are usually touring during those years between albums.
Tours are getting longer nowadays due to the number of venues.
I don't know why the breaks are longer this decade.
Some bands go like 7 or 8 years before releasing another album.

It's not always 2-3 years, some bands do it in one year. After releasing an album and going on tour they need some time off to spend with their families and to have a break. And it also takes awhile to write the music and then record it.

Writing music is like an author writing a book - it's not a cut-and-dry process, those bands need to find inspiration for a whole new album, develop the ideas, record them to perfection.. and maybe relax from previous touring. However 'Chinese Democracy' is going too far:)

To write the songs for the next album and to rest from touring/working.
And if a band put out 2 CD's a year, it'd be oversaturated and people wouldn't anticipate any of their CD's.

they need time to rest from all the publicity, talk shows, advertising, the media, performances, crazy fans etc.
besides, they need to write/look over the music for their next album. they need to pick/write the songs for their next album, how the cd will look like, talk over the cost, release date, all the legal matters, etc.

i don't know about you, but touring and playing every night
and being in the studio every day when i'm not touring would
get pretty stressful and tiring.
i'd need a break too.
