Yup Craigslist is good for some things but, Yahoo Groups is better.
It would take some doing but, go to the Yahoo Home Page & click on Groups. Then in the search field type in Freecycle Los Angeles or the area U live in & see what pops up. The title of the group should have the term "freecycle" in it.
These freecycle groups r part of a National Freecycle Organization. They require that anything posted on these groups is free & is no way a means to ask for something in return. It has to b free w/ No Strings Attached.
I've had luck find'g pots, wooden boxes, plants, paint even to paint the pots w/ for free on these types of groups around Phoenix.
If U need help find'g 1 of these groups on Yahoo, let me know & I'll help U to look for it. & if U still have problems, let me know & when I have time, I'll find the group for Ur area.

your question is rather unreal. Although, it is possible to get free stuff sometime, you have to be on the watch and look for them since there is NO one give out free stuff for a large quantity nor for a long time.
I got many of my pots,planters free from garage/moving/estate sales. And about plant, you can check the craigslist classify for LA and search for them (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/zip/)
