dealer sold me Avalanche with 17s on ground and 15" spare. I called on this and they said that a 17" wheel wouldn't fit under the truck, where the spare is located. This just doesn't seem right.

That's BS. They just didn't want to give you a 17" spare because of the cost.
If the overall height of the wheel/tire is the same as the factory 15", it should fit.
Be careful, I would assume that your 17's are a bit wider. Therefore, your spare may hang down a bit lower than normal.

Lots of vehicles have spare wheels that are a different diameter than the road wheels. For a spare it is not the diameter of the wheel but the overall diameter of the tire that is important. As long as the overall diameter of the spare tire is about the same as the overall diameter of the road tires, no worries.

A spare is not intended to be left on the ground. If the diameter of both tires are the same, you are good to go.

take a tape measurement and measure the 17' and then measure the storage space and see if it comes out to where it will fit or not.
