Nearly all basketballs have an inflatable inner rubber bladder, generally wrapped in layers of fiber and then covered with a tacky surface made either from leather (traditional), rubber, or a synthetic composite.

The ones used in the NBA currently are made out of leather, but the new balls that they attempted to use that none of the players liked were synthetic composite that was supposed to be a combination of leather and rubber.

Leather. David Stern tried a newer synthetic early in the season, but the players protested, and the old leather balls are back in.

leather. they tried synthetic rubber balls (<--"the new ones") to be "economically effective" but the balls got pulled half-way through the year because virtually every NBA superstar hated it.
