does the meaning coasting apply to both automatic and manual transmissions

To coast means to disengage the car's gearing. On a manual transmission, you depress the clutch pedal to disengage gearing. On an automatic, you'd have to slip the gear lever into neutral. Both are illegal, by the way. Your car should be in gear when you're driving.
