I'm looking to buy a flute, and I'm looking at an Emerson flute. Is it a good brand and if not is there any other brand that is not a very expensive one?

Emerson makes very good professional flutes but horrid beginner flutes. For beginner/student models that are cheap I recommend the Armstrong, Germeinhart. and possibly an intermediate Yamaha.

If you are intermediate and above go for the best tone quality.

I've only got Armstrong becuase of the price and quality.

Emerson is not a great brand of flute. If you're just looking for a flute to start playing on and you're only going to keep it for a year or two, it's fine, but a Yamaha or Gemeinhardt are not too much more expensive and are much better.

When I was in band, the only flute available was a Gemeinhart (sp?) and it was both cheap and musically sound. If price is important, why not give your local music store a call and see what brands they have available and what the prices are? I imagine that most flutes commercially available at music stores are in the same quality range, so you can't go wrong price shopping a bit.

Good luck.

It is okay, not the best. Look on ebay for a cheap Gemeinhardt. Goodwill has set up a site similar to ebay that has GREAT deals on instruments.
