Sorry about straying from your list, but I can't in good conscience answer this without adding THE BEST manufacturer (by far!) My scale of 1 to 10:

( #1) Have one built at your local, hole-in-the-wall, no-name computer shop. (Of course your first question should be, "How long have you been in business." There are several near me that are 10-15 years old - that's as old or older than the name brands you listed.) These people do an excellent job at steering you toward the best bang for the buck. All you have to do is tell them "longevity and the ability to upgrade" are important to you and they will be able to meet your budget AND you will have something you can upgrade to keep it "current" for years to come. You will have NO pre-loaded, outdated or unneeded "junkware" hogging your resources and causing software conflicts like you will get from the Name Brand Guys. You will have NO proprietary hardware that turns a $30 hardware failure into a $150 irritation. You WILL be able to upgrade with lower cost, off-the-shelf components so YOU get to control the future upgrades. Start with a better-than-average motherboard and you'll be able to enjoy it and upgrade it for years! Have a problem? Drop it off on the way to work, pick it up on the way home. YES, they have warranties and many even honor them (or give you a break) for a while after they've expired. This is based on my experience with 3 computers from 3 different shops back in the days before they helped teach me to build my own.

For the rest of the companies you mentioned, I think so highly of (#1) that I have to skip to (#4):

(#4a) Alien - uses EXCELLENT hardware and they are great for gaming, but you will easily pay 2 to 4 times what (#1) will charge. You are paying for a "Famous Name" and will get some really "cool" features that you will quickly forget about or ignore once the "new" has worn off (internal lighting, LED readouts, etc.)

(#4b) Dell - I've been using them for a decade (+/-) at work. Their business boxes are very reliable. I've checked out their high end boxes on their website - even the best rarely allow you to buy the most current components. The business cases seem very cramped and not very upgrade-able due to cheap motherboards. (That's a deal killer.)

Insert another big gap here:

(#7) HP, Gateway, EMach - 3 way tie. Extremely rare to find a new one with top-of-the-line components, varying levels of proprietary components, cheap, short-lived components, no thanks, I'll pass.

Gap.

(# Four-spaces-below-toiletpaper) ComPaq - wouldn't wish it on an enemy. Can't think of one positive thing to say. Bursting at the seams with outdated junkware and proprietary components and they have abysmal customer support. Cheap, cheap, cheap. I've had nothing but horrible experiences with 4 of them thanks to friends and family.

i wouldn't put e-machines in the same list as this group, they make a great future doorstop, can,t hardly get parts for them
(especially power supplies), hp, dell, and gateway all have their issues but from what i have experienced it was due to operator errors for example, no firewalls, no anti virus and no
spyware/adware software installed or updated. as for the
alienware to be honest this is the first i have ever heard of it and will be researching it later. i personally build my own and have not had any problems of any significance, but i help out a lot of people who bring me their computers that are mentioned above to work out the bugs. but the ones that are brought to me in the least are : compaq/hp, then dell, then
gateway. i stopped looking at e-machines, not worth the time.
my true recommendation would be for you to go to your local computer nerd/store and tell them what you are going to use the computer for and what bells and whistle you want installed,
they should be able to build you one that screams.good luck.

I'd say get an overdrive. Dell owns Alienware now so Alienware is just bad as dell, and Alienwares are noisy and overpriced.

I choose to build my own and like already said above. But if choosing from the above it would be:

HP
Compaq

I don't care much for the others.

My 1st PC was a Dell and I returned it the same week due to incompetence, since then I build my own.

I'd pick alienware because it is basically the mos hi-end computer, especially for gamers, and its a guarantee that you'll rarely have any problems with it.

HP...Best service help, highest quality equipment. They stand behind what they sell....And I would no longer recommend Gateway...I was a loyal customer of there's till this past year...They don't let you read the fine print by omission in my opinion.

Dell, but only if it's running Linux (like all 4 of my Dells are). Windows is not a very capable OS. Linux is cool and powerful.
