grading of lumber.how to tell #1 from #2 lumber and who can supply proper answer?

#1 is usually the best of everything then you have seconds which are flawed or not the best in one way or the other. So #1 lumber would have no knots, would be straight, no cracks. It would be perfect.

First of all it is Forest Service............not forestry service. As to your question, here's a pamphlet, I'll let you ferret out the answer.......it's been too many years for me.......think knots and edges....
