Yes, as long as you're smart about it. Keep in touch with your family or a friend as you travel and let them know where you are at throughout the day. Carry a first aid kit, and try to do a little research on the areas you'll be travelling thru so you know what you're coming up on. Make sure you have good directions, and a good map. Don't sleep at rest stops, and try to avoid them alltogether - stick to populated areas like truck stops and hotels. Don't run yourself ragged - if you need a break from driving, stop and take a walk or visit a tourist trap. If you're flying, make sure you keep all of your personal information, tickets, and flight times in a folder on your person - keep it tucked inside a jacket or just carry it in your hand - but don't put it with your luggage or it may end up lost. Make sure to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings, and you'll be just fine!

if you are smart and research where you are going.
don't go to a war torn country or a country that is currently
experiencing political troubles.
don't go out late to places where there aren't a lot of people
around (the beach etc.) then yes, if you're smart, it's safe.
don't talk to odd looking people and go into alley ways
you don't need to be in etc. trust your gut, if you think something is off about a situation, you're probably right.
make sure someone at home has a copy of your itinerary
and hotel information and a copy of the front page of your
passport as well.
