Brand is not a consideration when purchasing a computer. They are similar and honestly, any computer you take care of will last a long time. I have a 6-year old dell laptop that runs rings around many of the newer laptops I see today. Get anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and a firewall and use them. If so, the computer will run just fine.

Check out http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html to find the latest dell coupons and deals.

Good luck.

OMG....RUN and I mean RUN away from HP or Compaq. Please if anyone has ever listened to any advice I have ever given on anything, now is the time. If you decide to roll the dice and try them I hope you or your parents are good at speaking with customer service, making a stink, dealing with supervisors, and have lots of time to spend shipping via FedEx.

I'll try to give you the rundown of where my fondness for their quality products lies (excuse me while I rip my tongue from my cheek). About 2 years ago I desperately needed a laptop for work. I did a fair amount of homework and decided on either a Toshiba or Dell. The ones I liked were really expensive and right around then I had a big unexpected bill. But I was at one of the warehouse stores and found a great deal on a decent Compaq, for what it had.

To sum it all up, that one never worked the store exchanged it. The exchange died so I had to ship back, HP repaired and it totally died. They upgraded me to a top of the line HP. The power kept going out until it died. They fixed it until it died. They changed the mother board and mailed it back and it would not boot up out of the box. They sent me a new one, which I've now had about 2 months and the power keeps going out on it. They want me to send it back again, and I'm going to have to. I've never had this many problems with anything ever. And look how many different ones, so it shows I just didn't get one bad one.

RUN AWAY FROM HP! Shop the sales...Dell has some good reasonably priced ones and makes a much better product And they keep having great sales lately. I am still kicking myself for not waiting and getting a Dell (or other brand). You might want to check local stores to see what is on clearance since it sounds like you don't need the top of the line. A lot of times stores will mark down ones that are a little older, slower, but they are still very good.

Good luck with it!

PS I agree in theory that a computer is only as good as it's componants, BUT when one company can't seem to make a good one, and their repair dept can't repair them, and I have literally their top of the line (HP Pavilion DV9000T) and it keeps having problems, I say avoid that company. I plan to anytime I buy any more puters!

As you said, if you are going to use it for school work and nothing that requires very good hi-end graphics then a DELL would be fine and you could find them under 800$, go to www.dell.com for details. On the other side, if you ever plan to do anything that requires good graphics, like playing games, then I would suggest to get an HP. I just got one last year and its really good.

Hp recently took over as number 1 PC manufacturer worldwide - taking that position away from Dell.

it will come down to price and features

Quality of a computer is not determined by brand, but the components inside it.

Both brands are good. It all depends on your hardware requirements. your CPU, Ram and also your graphic cards. Which brands offer the lowest price for the same hardware requirements.

I recommend Toshiba instead
Dell is to hard to deal with when you need assistance or repair. Your call gets routed to Indonesia when you have a technical issue
